All the words

Verse 1

Out on the island the morning is new,
Hills and the rivers all shining with dew,
Wood from the forest and stone from the shore,
Gifts from the Maker, and room for much more!
Some build on sand where the digging is fast,
Only the Rock is a ground that will last.
Here on the Rock is the place to begin:
Open the door and let everyone in!

Chorus

Built on the Rock, built on the Rock,
Rain may come down and the wind may knock,
Built on the Rock, it will stand, it will stand,
Not on the sand: held in Your hand!
Block after block and day after day,
You are the Rock and You show me the way,
Lord, build my house and I'll build it with You,
Built on the Rock, standing strong, standing true!

Verse 2

Call all my friends and we'll build it as one,
Laughing and building in light of the sun,
Bridges and gardens and towers of stone,
Lanterns in windows so no one's alone.
Room for the lonely and room for the small,
Doors that are open and welcome for all,
Here in the shelter of Your loving care,
Always a place at the table to share!

Bridge (×2)

Storms may come, winds may blow,
Waters rise, rain may fall,
Still I stand, this I know:
You're the Rock, Lord of all!

Ending

Built on the Rock, built on You!

About the song

“Built on the Rock” tells the story Jesus told of the wise builder: some build on sand where the digging is fast, but a house on the rock stands through the rain, the floods and the wind. It sings of the island's wood and stone as gifts from the Maker, of doors open to everyone, lanterns in the windows so no one's alone and a place at the table to share, and it grew from Matthew 7:24-25, Psalm 127:1 (“Unless the Lord builds the house…”) and Psalm 61:2. Written for Block Builder, where it plays now and then (without the words) while you build.

“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24 (World English Bible)
